Don’t you hate it when people lack common courtesy?

I am a big tennis fan.  The past two weeks, the tennis world has been enthralled in the Australian Open, the first of four Major tournaments in the year.  It is exciting!  A player must win three sets out of five in each match.  If you are not a tennis player, suffice it to say that some of these matches can last up to five hours!  Most other professional sports usually last three hours, but tennis can last up to five.  It is not only a test of physical fitness, but also of mental toughness.

This past week, during a match, one player hit his opponent in the arm with one of his shots.  It was an accident.  It is a part of the game. Sometimes, you get hit.  There was no foul play in the shot.  The player that was hit in the arm, went on to win the match.  After each match, it is tennis etiquette that you shake your opponents hand.  In this particular case, the player that was accidentally hit in the arm did not shake his opponents hand.  This is something that is not acceptable in the tennis world.  It shows poor etiquette.  The entire crowd booed him.

This incident reminds me of a text in the Bible where Paul says, "Let your gentleness be known to everyone (Philippians 4:5).  This passage is a challenge to each of us to interact with gentleness in every situation we find ourselves in.  Even when we have been wronged, we show through our kindness that we have the love of God flowing through us. May the God of peace and kindness fill you with peace and kindness.
